December 2022 BOM – Georgia Ports Authority

The Pooler Lions Club is pleased to recognize Georgia Ports Authority as one of our December 2022 Businesses of the Month. They have continued to be a sponsor of our Chipping for Charity golf fundraiser, and we appreciate their support!

The Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) is dedicated to providing customers with the most efficient, productive port facilities in the nation, and to creating jobs and business opportunities to benefit communities across Georgia.

The GPA owns and operates deepwater ports in Savannah and Brunswick. The 1,345-acre Garden City Terminal in Savannah is the largest single-operator terminal in North America, and the third busiest gateway for containerized trade in the U.S. In fiscal year 2022, the Port of Savannah handled nearly 5.8 million twenty-foot equivalent container units. In addition to increased container trade, breakbulk tonnage also saw strong growth over the same period, up 15.7 percent to more than 3 million tons. Mayor’s Point Terminal in Brunswick turned in a particularly strong performance, with breakbulk forest products leaping from 52,244 tons to 252,000 tons year over year.

According to the most recent economic impact study by the University of Georgia’s Terry College of Business, port activity supports 561,000 jobs across the state, $140 billion in annual sales, $59 billion in state GDP, and $33 billion in paychecks each year. At the local level, GPA supports more than 64,000 jobs in Chatham, Bryan, Liberty and Effingham counties. The increasing cargo volumes handled by GPA ensures the security and growth of job opportunities in the Savannah region and across the state of Georgia.
