Minutes of the Pooler Lions Club Meet and Greet, held on Tuesday May 28, 2024,

at Lovezzola’s Family Pizza Restaurant

The meeting was called to order at 6.30pm by 2nd VP Lion Becky Reid who welcomed the gathering, offered the prayer and led the Pledge.

The Member Moment was presented by Lion Wanda Bogan. Lion Wanda (aka Windy) relocated to Savannah from the Washington, DC area. She and her husband Edward were introduced to our Club by Lion Linda Saytanides. Wanda and Ed are very active members of the Club. They participate in activities such as the Loaves and Fishes program among others. Windy is an active member of our Sitting and Knitting group and Ed is our web master who takes care of the Club’s online presence.

The College Scholarship awards were presented by Lion Mayor Karen Williams. Lion Karen introduced Mr Mathew Wirth, Field Representative for Congressman Buddy Carter, who was unable to be present due to his congressional commitments. Lion Karen also thanked the other members of the committee, Lion Patricia Ratcliffe and Lion David Reiter for their stellar support and dedication to the task in the vetting of the entries and the selection of the scholarship winners.

There are four (4) scholarship winners:

Maddox Clark whose scholarship is valued at $1000.00, attended Benedictine Military School and has obtained a GPA of 3.9. He has been accepted at the University of Georgia and plans to major in Journalism and International affairs.

Mahika Patel whose scholarship is valued at $1000.00 attended Savannah Arts Academy, and has a GPA of 97. She was ranked 65th out of 212 students. She has been accepted to attend the University of Georgia where she plans to major in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and minor in Nutritional Science.

Matteo Ventura was awarded a scholarship valued at $750.00. He attended New Hampstead High School and has a 4.0 GPA. He has been accepted into the Honors College at Georgia Southern University where plans to major in Computer Science.

Kevin Dong, who attended Herschel V Jenkins High School, was awarded a $750.00 scholarship. His impressive GPA of 97 places him 19th out of 151 students. He has been accepted to attend Purdue University where he plans to major in Mechanical Engineering.

The Club heartily congratulates our Scholarship winners and wish them all the best in their future endeavors.

Project Updates & Opportunities

  • Lion Kimberly Nguyen Chair of the Crayon Initiative committee encourages members to donate their unwanted crayons for the project.

  • Treasurer Lion Windy Bogan reminded Members that the Club’s yearly

  • Membership dues are due no later than June 15th.

  • The Juneteenth Celebration will take place on June 15th, 2024. More information to follow in due course.

  • A Place To Dream bed delivery is scheduled for June 25th, 2024. Members who are interested in helping with this project are asked to meet at 8.45am at 1407 Wheaton Street, Savannah, to assemble the beds.

  • The Loaves and Fishes Pantry project is in need of a Financial Specialist and a Vice President. Interested members are encouraged to contact Lion Bonnie O’leary for further information.

  • This year’s Golf Tournament was a phenomenal success. There were 88 golfers. A total Of $24 000+ was realized. The auction raised $4 000+.

  • Set your Calendars! Next year’s tournament: Saturday May 3rd 2025.

  • Lion Pastor Hubbard and the Committee would like to express their gratitude to the 20+ volunteers who gave of their time to make this event the success that it was.

  • Lion Len Cutuli reported that the Club was awarded a Certificate of Recognition for its contribution of $3000.00 to the Georgia Lighthouse Vision project.

Happy $Dollars were donated as some members shared ‘happy’ events with the group.

The Raffle was won by Lion Ann Bryant. However, since she did not select the Joker card, she was given a consolation prize.
