Pooler Lions Club
Sittin’ & Knittin’
The Sittin’ & Knittin’ Service Program was born in 2020 when one club member asked another club member to teach her how to knit. It was decided to meet at a local coffee shop one Saturday afternoon with our knitting needles and yarn and to invite other club members and guests to join us as we knitted for charities. It was advertised on social media and knitters as well as crocheters joined the group.
The Pooler community supported our efforts by donating large amounts of yarn for our service project and we thank them! The first items we made were lap blankets for veterans at the Carl Vinson VA Hospital as part of our GA Lions State Convention. The knitting project spread to Lions Clubs throughout the state of Georgia and the hospital received 604 blankets total!
Currently, we meet on the first and third Saturdays of each month at Stir Coffee, 505 Hwy 80 in Pooler at 2:00pm. Volunteers knit and crochet items for different charities at the meeting as well as at home also. All of the donated yarn is used for handmade items for different charities including:
– blankets for A Place to Dream, a signature program of the YMCA, which is an organization that provides beds and linens for children who do not have their own beds
– hats and scarves for Old Savannah City Mission for their clients
– blankets for the children at the Dwaine and Cynthia Willett Children’s Hospital
– hats, scarves and blankets for Safe Shelter, a place for victims of domestic violence
– hats for chemo patients for Touching Hands Cancer Outreach in Effingham
Beginners are welcome and we will teach you knitting and crocheting as needed. Bring your family and friends; all are welcome. Generally, about a dozen ladies
